✨ What Is Lippan Art?

Lippan art (also known as mud and mirror work) is a traditional mural craft from Kutch, Gujarat, India. Made with a mix of clay, mirrors, and creativity, it adds a beautiful, earthy texture to walls and décor.

At Craft & Fun, we love celebrating Indian traditions—so here’s how you can try this stunning folk art at home!

🛠️ What You’ll Need:

  • MDF board or wooden base
  • White clay or ceramic powder mix (fevicol + ceramic powder)
  • Small decorative mirrors (round, square, or diamond)
  • Palette knife or fingers for shaping
  • White acrylic paint (optional)
  • Fabric glue / fevicol
  • Pencil & design outline (optional)

🎯 Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Start with a clean MDF or wooden base. You can paint it white or leave it raw, depending on the finish you want.

Step 2: Sketch Your Design

Lightly draw your design with pencil. Mandala patterns, peacocks, floral borders, or geometric motifs work beautifully for beginners.

Step 3: Make the Clay Mix

Mix ceramic powder with fevicol until you get a soft dough-like consistency. You can also use ready-made clay if preferred, i usualy use mould it clay.

Step 4: Shape & Apply the Design

Roll and shape the clay using your hands or a tool. Start adding it to your surface as per your outline.

Step 5: Add the Mirrors

Press the mirrors gently into the clay before it dries. Be creative with placement—mirrors catch light beautifully!

Step 6: Let It Dry

Let the art dry completely (6–12 hours). Once dry, you can leave it as is, or paint it white or metallic for a modern touch.

🖼️ Pro Tips:

  • Use metallic highlights (gold/silver) for a glam effect
  • Apply clear varnish to preserve it
  • Hang on a contrasting wall to make the design pop

💬 Final Thoughts

Lippan art is more than just decoration—it’s a way to connect with heritage, mindfulness, and creativity. Whether you're making one for your home or as a gift, each piece tells a unique story.
